Thomas wins $50,000 from MyCareer!

Posted By: Thomas Shaw, 8:42pm Thursday 12 March 2009    Print Article

Did Thomas really win $50,000 from MyCareer? No. But I did have you there for a second thinking I had won. I first wrote about the competition MyCareer were running on 29th January 2009, Sell your friends emails to MyCareer.

On further reflection of the previous article I wrote, I still give MyCareer kudos for creativity and thought, but the game was overly complicated for the average person to play.

I ended up playing the game, and ran out of room available to purchase more items. My final total was $2,158,765

Was this a successful marketing promotion for MyCareer’s Head Hunter? Any comments?

How did you find the time? Honestly, it was a laborious exercise that took too long to set up. My mantra is "the path of least resistance". Translated, this means that any marketing campaign (including a landing/ home page) that has the user "do" too many things in order to engage the site/ campaign is effectively telling the user to "go away". Where I come from it's one, two clicks maybe at a stretch, three and the user has arrived at the intended place of action... enter details, engaged, move on.

Having tried Head Hunter at an established consultancy (not my current one) that is now hemorrhaging the program never, ever, ever delivered on its promise. Even after they sent their marketing gurus into out office armed with donuts and enthusiasm... nuh.
